Activities and Impact

The Cultivating Clean Air in Urban Environments project is built around practical activities, carried out in stages, which combine green infrastructure, environmental education, and cross-border cooperation.

Development of a common strategy for urban gardens (RO–MD)

Key activities:

  • establishment of a cross-border Steering Committee, composed of experts, authority representatives, and NGOs;
  • organizing online working meetings to define the urban garden concept;

  • the integration of themes such as biodiversity, clean air, climate change adaptation, and community inclusion.

Result: a public strategy usable by local authorities and civic organizations.

In parallel, a strategy dedicated to women and climate action is being developed, promoting the role of female leadership in environmental policies.

Development of the pilot urban garden in Ungheni

In the municipality of Ungheni, a pilot urban garden of approximately 0.8 ha will be developed on public land provided by the local authority.

Key activities:

  • the design and organization of the green space (paths, relaxation areas, community spaces);

  • the development of sustainably cultivated plots;

  • the integration of the the solutions are green, innovative:

    • the sensors for the monitoring of air quality,

    • solar lighting,

    • systems, composting,

    • the elements for the support of biodiversity (eg. little houses for birds, and insects).

Result: a functional urban garden, open to the community and integrated into the city’s infrastructure.

Educational workshops and community activities

The project includes a series of workshops and educational activities for residents of Ungheni and Iași, as well as other interested stakeholders.

Topics covered:

  • urban gardening and ecological practices;

  • biodiversity protection in cities;

  • responsible use of natural resources;

  • the role of the community in developing green spaces.

Result: increased awareness and civic engagement of local communities.

Experience exchange and cross-border cooperation

The project facilitates the exchange of best practices between Romania and the Republic of Moldova, leveraging existing experience in urban gardening.

Key activities:

  • study visits and thematic meetings;

  • joint events for experts, NGOs, and local authorities;

  • connecting the project to similar networks and initiatives in the region.

Result: strengthened institutional cooperation and transfer of know-how.

Development of a replication kit for other communities

The experience gained will be compiled into a replication kit, enabling other cities and communities to develop their own urban gardens.

The kit includes:

  • practical guide for establishing and maintaining an urban garden;

  • recommendations for local authorities;

  • educational and visual materials;

  • examples of best practices from the project.

Result: a free, easy-to-use tool with regional applicability.
